Vision Self Help Development Group receives large shipment of costumes
Interview with Tara Cowell-Plain, Film Producer, Vancouver, BC Canada:
1) What makes you want to get involved with mobile movement?
I love the idea of being able to reach across wide distances, be it cultural, physical, etc and touch lives in a meaningful and helpful way. It's exciting and rewarding at the same time. I feel like I have so much and this site gives me an opportunity to share it.
2) How does it make you feel?
Many things. Sourcing out the items was fun and exhilirating. I love trying to find ways to solve problems and if possible, involve others in a common mission. I love the energy of people working together. I felt inspired and moved by the heart and generosity of those I was trying to help. It opened my heart and everyone I came into contact with. I've learned that giving in the most seemingly small ways can feel like the biggest gift we give to ourselves. This experience overshadowed lots of the supposedly important responsibilities that were going on at the time in my life, only because it consistently made me feel good, connected and caring. I can still feel the warmth in my chest and I'm smiling now thinking about this.
3) What do you think active philanthropy is?
I think it's doing what you can in every moment to assist others in affirming life, creating possibilities, bringing hope, having compassion, bringing our capacity to create and change reality to make things better for people. I think it's possible to engage in large and small ways. Just that we engage is what's important, I believe.
4) What holds others back from participating?
I'm not sure. Maybe it's frightening to think about all the pain in the world, and how helpless we are. It's hard to grasp how one small act could really make a difference. Perhaps we think that if we start to give, we will end up with nothing, even though the opposite has almost always been the case in my life. Perhaps our old brains haven't quite lost the small tribe mentality - as long as me and mine are ok then it's ok. But the world is changing and there are lots of people who are trying to make things better and deep down, I believe most people are genuinely good and generous and caring, just need to be inspired. It's daunting to open your heart and really seek change because of how huge the monsters seem but it's in us to be David against Goliath and overcome.
