Victorious lands big client through Mobile Movement
10
Following the launch of the Mobile Movement website, Victorious Youth Group of Kibera had something truly exciting happen to them. Having seen the group’s profile on the site, Rose, a Kenyan married to a German and living abroad, had questions. As a Kenyan and an importer of African goods to Europe – she runs a gift shop in Germany – Rose knew that often, things reported to be made by youth in some countries were actually cheaply made by poorly paid migrant workers in other places. To answer her questions firsthand, on her most recent visit to her homeland, Rose tracked down Victorious at their workshop in Kibera… and found out they were for real! Overjoyed, Rose placed a large order for Victorious’ handcrafted bone jewelry, which she paid for on the spot and collected soon after, and promised to return in a few months for more.
The group, with their knowledge gained in small business training with EYA, sat down to discuss how to allocate the profits from this major sale. Ensuring a balanced approach, they have set aside some for savings, and are ready to invest some in themselves. The group have earmarked $750 towards the upgrading project of their workshop – and are now seeking matching funds from Mobile Movement members to complete the project.

Hello Victorious, I am very pleased by your progress and the ability of your group to make consistent and high quality products. My wife is Kenyan and my daughter and I are in Germany. We are following your project silently, but with keen interest. Given the amount of precision grinding, drilling, milling and lathing tools the German's manufacture, we thought it may be interesting for your group and others like it to test some equipment out. I hope to visit Kenya in the next 6 months, so perhaps I can bring some along.
