One of our urban agriculture projects is making solar cookers. Here are some photos we took on our mobile phone to show you the steps involved in making them. Here we are laying foil, gluing and measuring.

Hello El Elohe -- and Jessica:
First Jessica -- congratulations - this is fabulous. Am finding my way around the site and need more time to ponder and figure out the donating stuff.

El Elohe -- am very interested in your projects -- could you give me some more specific examples of what you are doing and what you need help with? Thanks, Moura

Hi Moura, our project entails making of low-cost solar stoves using cardboard and aluminum foil. The price of one stove is about USD 2.50.
We want to sell the stoves to charity and humanitarian organizations for distribution to rural folks especially in the northern and eastern parts of Kenya where there is lots of sun all year round . This way,we hope to create job opportunities for young people in our community.
The use of such stoves will reduce demand for wood fuel which is a major cause of environmental destruction.
For now, we'd like to get more ideas on marketing the stoves. What do you think?
    Thanks, El Elohe.

Hmmm, marketing the stoves to charity groups? Seems like the best thing would be to do a demonstration, maybe side by side with a wood or charcoal stove, so they can see the smoke pouring out of it. And maybe donate one or two to each organization so they can try it out themselves.

  • El Elohe Landscaping & Artworks

Thanks Esther. We're already giving out samples and doing demonstrations though not side by side with other stoves - that's a great idea. We'll try it out.

Hello Moura, aside from making stoves, we provide landscaping and gardening services. We also grow vegetables in empty spaces in our neighbourhood. Initially, our objective was to keep the neighbourhood clean and green. Now that we have acquired business skills from the Urban Entrepreneurship Programme, we are organizing our activities into a formal business. We would like to offer our services to institutions and companies around Nairobi. We do not have formal training in landscaping so books and magazines on this subject will help up increase our knowledge and skills. We'd also be happy to get new ideas, tips and tricks of the trade - and even flower seeds from your country! Thanks, El Elohe.

    Hello El Elohe,

Wanted to check in with you and see how your projects are going.

Please send us all an update!

    Best,

    Jessy

Hello Jessy, we are getting on well with our projects. At the moment, we are taking advantage of the rains to grow indigenous green vegetables on all the open spaces we have.
We are also restocking our tree nursery. We supplied saplings for a government tree planting programme this year and we hope to supply much more next year.

For the last three weeks, we have been servicing an order for 13,990 tree seedlings from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. This was way beyond our capacity and we had to work with other youth groups. It was a great experience. We made new friends and expanded our business network.

We are getting ready to start our vegetable farming project. We settled on this idea because vegetable farming is a low cost and high yield business. We will start with African nightshade and vegetable amaranth as these two are very popular here. The vegetables will be ready for the market in 3-4 weeks. Does anyone out there have any experience, ideas, tips to share on this activity? We are eager to hear from you.

Hi there, I was wondering how the solar cookers are actually doing at cooking. What kinds of things do you cook in them? Meat, Ugali, Sukuma? Thanks

  • El Elohe Landscaping & Artworks

Hi Karun, we were able to cook greens - sukumawiki included, rice, meat stew, eggs and porridge. On the business side, as of November 09, we had sold 54 stoves at an average price of 178/- . Since the rains started late last year, the project has been on the back burner.
